Selfie Time

This piece was inspired by Naydine Bosman’s work on her instagram. When I scrolled past her piece it immediately caught my eye. I really admired the composition and character design in the piece, and wanted to see if I had the skills to attempt something similar while also finding a way to put my own spin on it. I sketched a character design I thought would be appropriate on my iPad and started considering how best to model and animate the character.

Modeling

In the modeling process I got a few ideas which diverged from my original sketch that I decided I liked better, which is how the character’s hairstyle came to be. The character is mostly made up of simple primitives, with the hands being a volume meshed collection of cylinders. The character was then rigged using EJ Hassenfratz’s Bendy Limbs Rig tool and animated to snap the selfie.

Compositing and Final

Once the 3d process was done and exported I brought the PNGs into After Effects for compositing. To bring in elements to round out the composition I drew inspiration from the UIs of Instagram and LinkedIn. Filling out the content, I drew the selfie from the camera’s perspective in Procreate on my iPad and placed it into the Instagram UI. Since everyone loves cats, especially on social media, I drew a little furry friend and placed them in the other social media UI window. To give the piece a bit of extra touch, I did some slight color correction and added a bit of vignetting to bring the whole piece together.
